Monastery Koutloumousiou

The Koutloumousiou Abbey lies five minutes away to the southwest of Karies. It is situated among huge trees and it is surrounded by hills which are covered by trees. Several cells are spread all around and the natural beauty along with the tranquility that exists there generates unforgettable feelings. There is a srping at the abbey’s entrance to quench the vistor’s thirst.

The monastery was built before 988 and is considered as one of the oldest abbeys of Athos. It was destoyed later on but at the end of the 13th century, it was rebuilt.

The abbeys of Alepiou, Philadelphou and Kaliagras joined the Koutloumousiou Abbey. Soon it became a popular center for intellectual interests and pursuits. In the 15th century it was destroyed by the Pope’s Latin delegates but is was rebuilt by the kings of Moldavia and Wallachia. In 1857 and 1870, fires destroyed some wings of the monastery but they were rebuilt thanks to the efforts of the abbot Meletios from Lefkada.

The main temple was built in the middle of the 16th century and it is named in honor of the Transfiguration of Christ. In and out of the monastery, there are thirteen chapels some of which have excellent wall paintings. The reredos of the main temple date from the 19th century and several of the abbey’s gems are quite noteworthly and valuable. The library contains 103 manuscripts on paper and 3.500 printed.
