Ouranoupoli - History

Ouranoupoli is situated on the third peninsula of Halkidiki, right on the gate of Mount Athos, and abstains 120km away from the airport of Thessaloniki.

The settlement was founded by refugees who came from Minor Asia on the location of ancient Ouranoupoli, built by Alexarhos, Kassandros’ brother, in 315 B.C. The name was changing during the pass of the time, when one of the most important one was “Prosforion”. The name “Ouranoupoli” derived from the coins found in the surrounding area, which depicted the heaven goddess Aphrodite, writing “Heaven City”, and “Ouranidon Poleos”. The Tower standing imposingly on the front of the small port was built in 1344 by Vatopediou Monastery and since then represents the land mark of Ouranoupoli.

In Ouranoupoli, you can enjoy delicious dining with fresh fish and seafood, all caught by Mount Athos Gulf, or your drink in front of glorious views to the isles or Ammouliani.

On the beach you will find small boats which you can rent to visit the golden sandy beaches across the small islands, which hug turquoise sea waters…
