It was built in 1375 AD by Saint Dionysius with the support of the emperor of Trebizond Alexios III Komnenos.

 

Today the Monastery keeps the right hand of Timios Prodromos, more than 1100 manuscripts, about 60 monks live there and celebrates on July 7 (Julian Calendar - the feast of Saint John the Baptist).
